Are you wondering why His Grace African Food exists? Then, you should read this post.
Every restaurant starts with a reason. Not just a business plan or a location, but a clear reason. Usually, it is a moment, a feeling, a gap that needs filling. For us, that reason was simple: we wanted people to taste Africa the way it is actually supposed to taste.
That is the short version of why His Grace African Food exists. The longer version takes a little more telling. Keep reading.
It Started With a Problem Most Africans in Chicago Know
If you have ever lived far from home, we mean really far, then you know what it feels like when you are craving food that nobody around you can make. Not a restaurant version of it. Not a “fusion-inspired” interpretation. The real thing. You know the kind your grandmother made without measuring anything, the kind that filled your house with a smell that meant you were exactly where you were supposed to be.
That’s a feeling many Africans in Chicago know deeply. The city is big, diverse, and genuinely proud of its food culture. But for a long time, authentic West African cuisine, not generalized “African food,” but the layered, specific, generational kind, was not easy to find on the South Side. Especially not food prepared the way it’s actually meant to be prepared. That gap is what His Grace African Food was built to close.
Why the South Side, Why This Community
We didn’t choose 1209 W 115th Street by accident. The South Side of Chicago is home to a significant and growing African and African-American population. These people deserve access to food that reflects their culture without compromise. It is also a community that has historically been underserved by dining options that fully celebrate African culinary heritage.
His Grace African Food Chicago was intentionally planted here. This is where the community is. This is where the need is. And honestly, this is where the warmth is: the kind of neighborhood energy that makes a restaurant feel like an extension of someone’s home rather than a transaction.
What We Actually Believe About Food
There’s a phrase we come back to a lot: bringing Africa to your palate. It sounds simple, but it carries a lot of weight.
It means we are not adapting. We are not softening spice levels to appeal to the broadest possible audience. We are not substituting ingredients because the original version is harder to source.
The food at His Grace African Food is prepared using recipes passed down through generations. We believe that:
- Fresh ingredients aren’t optional. Every meal starts with careful sourcing. The quality you taste is a direct result of what goes into the pot.
- Tradition is worth protecting. There are shortcuts in every kitchen. We don’t take the ones that matter.
- Food is community. Every plate we send out is an act of connection to culture, to memory, to the people sitting across the table from each other.
- Everyone is welcome here. His Grace serves Africans who want a taste of home, Black Americans exploring their culinary roots, and anyone else who is curious, hungry, and open. The table is big enough.

One Last Thing
The name His Grace is not incidental. It is a statement of gratitude for the ability to do this work, for the community that has embraced it, and for the tradition of African cooking that makes it all possible.
We don’t take it lightly. And we hope that every plate we serve reflects that.
